Only 10 more days left in our food drive and we still have a long way to go to reach our goal! Thank you so much to all of our residents who have already contributed! Our goal of 156 food items (that’s only 1 per apartment) takes contributions by everyone! Please remember, if you are unable to make it to the office but have items to donate, please call or email us and we’ll set up a time to pick them up at your apartment. Crowne Park is Teaming with Second Harvest Food Bank

“Today, 1 in 10 Americans is food insecure, which means they cannot reliably say where their next meal is coming from. Food is a basic need – the fuel we need to survive and thrive. Hungry children can’t learn and hungry adults can’t work and live productively.”

”Hunger in our communities is largely hidden. But whether it involves a parent skipping meals, eating less than is needed to live a healthy life or making due with foods that are filling but lack nutrition, its affects can be devastating, especially among our more vulnerable citizens, including children and older adults.”

“While hunger is a widespread problem, it is unique in that it is truly a solvable problem. The resources exist. The United States is the largest and most efficient food producer in the world.”

Hunger is a significant problem year-round in every community across the United States; however, because of the current economy and time of year, food banks supplies are lower than normal. We hope to change that!

Any non-perishable food items that you wish to donate can be dropped off in the Crowne Park office in the month of November. If you cannot make it during office hours, please call our office at 336-761-1666 and we will make plans to pick up your donations at your apartment.

According to the Second Harvest Food Bank of NC’s website, the most needed items are:

Proteins	Milk	Grains	Fruits & Vegetables
Canned lean meats, a good source of low-fat protein, and canned or dry beans, a good source of fiber.	Shelf-stable low-fat dairy products fortified with vitamin D.	Non-perishable whole grains.	Canned or dry fruits and vegetables in an array of colors to ensure a variety of vitamins and minerals.

2008 – 2009 Winter Tips

LET’S BE PREPARED FOR WINTER 2008-2009!

Cold weather is just around the corner so here are a few tips to help you be prepared!

1. Test your smoke alarm by pushing in on the lighted button to make sure it is working. If there is no tone when the button is pushed, please call the office ASAP!

2. Initial start up of heat could cause smoke alarm to go off, generally this is the dust burning off the coils and is nothing to be alarmed about.

3. When building a fire:

Always make sure the flue is open.
Please don’t burn pine, it leaves a residue and could cause a chimney fire.
Put hot coals in a metal container only.
NEVER put hot coals in trash compactor!
Keep fire screen closed.

4. Please check all windows and doors for drafts. Contact the office at 761-1666 to place a work order if you feel you have a draft area in your apartment.

5. Anytime the temperature falls below freezing for any extended length of time, be sure to leave faucets dripping. Also leave cabinets open to plumbing so warm air can circulate to the kitchen and bathroom pipes.

6. Make certain if leaving town to NOT turn heat off or below 60 degrees, this could cause pipes to burst and apartments to flood.

7. In the event of ice or snow, sidewalks, parking lots, and common areas may become slick. Be sure to use extra caution when walking in these areas. Crowne Park Apartments will start using ice melt and shoveling once snow or ice has stopped, however slick spots may still exist so ALWAYS use caution.

Winston Salem is a great place to live during the fall season! Here are few fun ideas nearby:

Take a short 25 minute drive to Pilot Mountain State Park. See the beauty of the fall leaves changing from high atop the pinnacle over 1,400 feet above the piedmont plateau. Treat yourself to a horseback ride through the woods or challenge the river from raft or canoe. A seven-mile woodland corridor joins two sections of the park, each section offering a wealth of opportunities for outdoor fun.

Have you ever seen those scary movies where someone gets lost in a corn field? Get a group together and visit The Amazing Maize Maze in Huntersville. There will also be hayrides and a bonfire. The Maize Maze is open Thursday-Sunday 10 am-5 pm. Flashlight Maze will be held Friday Night, October 31^stat 7:00 PM. Visit their website at www.ruralhill.net/maze.htm. This is a North Carolina Halloween tradition!

Reynolda House offers Sunday in the Park Community Day Festival on Sunday, October 19, 2008 at 2:00pm. Reynolda House invites you to a fall festival celebrating Seeing the City: Sloan’s New York. Tour the Museum and enjoy art activities and music on the park-like grounds of the Reynolda Estate. The Reynolda lawn will be transformed for one afternoon into New York City’s public pleasure grounds circa 1904, such as Madison Square Park and Central Park. Entertainment will include calliope music and a barbershop quartet, a one-cent movie show, strolling performers, festive balloons, sketching artists, and refreshments. Old Salem Museum and Gardens hosts Harvest Day on October 18 this year. There will be demonstrations throughout the district including Making Apple Cider Vinegar in the Tavern , Drying Apples & Gardening in the Miksch Yard, Using the Cider Mill built by the Old Salem Trades Staff behind the Tavern. We are going green!

We are happy to announce that Crowne Park now offers recycling! You will find the recycling containers at the front of the property next to the compactor. Many of our residents have asked for the service and we are proud to offer it as a privilege. If trash is found in these containers, they will have to be taken away. Please be responsible and hold your neighbors responsible!

The program collects newspaper, magazines, telephone books, chipboard, junk mail and office paper, corrugated cardboard, glass bottles and jars, aluminum beverage cans, steel food and beverage cans, empty aerosol cans, and all plastic bottles, excluding hazardous waste bottles. Please see the office for more information. We want to do this right so we can keep this privilege!

To help out even more, you can reduce your impact on the environment by reducing the amount of materials you use. Here are a couple tips:

Think before you buy! As you prepare to indulge in this holiday season, think about the impact of each product you are buying. Was it made half way around the world (think about the energy to ship it) in a place with little environmental regulation and/or in a sweatshop? Are the products made or grown in sustainable ways? Does the person really need it? You can give a gift of trees or bees or make a donation to a worthy nonprofit that’s working for a sustainable planet as an alternative to toys filled with lead paint and one more tie or picture frame.

Eschew catalogs you don’t use! Call the toll-free numbers on catalogs and asked to be removed from their mailing lists. Or you can go to this web site: http://www.catalogchoice.org/ which allows you to remove numerous catalogs at once. This saves resources in lots of ways: fewer trees are cut and processed; less fossil fuel is used to produce paper, print, mail, and distribute unwanted catalogs, and less winds up going to recycling or the landfill.

Stop drinking bottled water. About 75 percent of plastic bottles end up in landfills where their life cycle is 700 years or more. As we’ve noted before, plastic only breaks into smaller and smaller pieces; it never disappears. Plastic is made from petroleum. Manufacturing bottled water uses over 1.5 million barrels of oil per year. That’s enough oil to fuel 100,000 cars.

Thanks so much to the residents of Crowne Park Apartments who have donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation! October is halfway over and we still have a long way to go to reach our goal! Take your lunch one day and save the $5 to donate! Skip your morning expresso and instead, stop by our office to donate! Every dollar counts and goes toward education, treatment and research. Breast Cancer has affected so many people in our community and in the world. We will be out by the gate again this Friday with FREE breakfast. We’ll also be giving you a chance to donate to help find a cure for breast cancer!

Look for us by the curb and pick up breakfast on your way out!

As summer comes to a close and leaves begin to change colors, we say good-bye to the summer season! Soon it will be time to break out the jackets and sweaters. We would like to thank all of our residents for making this a very memorable season and we all look forward to a great fall!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Be on the lookout for the Crowne Park staff on Friday mornings. We’ll be outside of the office with breakfast treats, informational brochures and opportunities for you to donate to the Susan G. Komen foundation. Please bring your donations to the office anytime before October 25. With every donation, you will be entered into drawings for some awesome prizes.
